先日の予告から少しばかり改題して，FOAFの話をしてみる．RNA1.8にようやくFOAFのマネジメント機能がついた．つけたばっかりということで，メタデータとして甘いところが多々あるのは承知していて，これは議論しながら改善していく所存．というかこっそりつけたFOAF機能が予想以上にメタデータコミュニティの人々に注目されていることに驚いています．

で，そのFOAF．最初にその存在を知ったのは昨年のいつぞやの IBM developerWorks で，こんなものにまでメタデータがあるのかと半ばあきれた覚えがある．プロジェクトのページにもRDFの Vaporware だ，みたいなことが書いてあってまあそうやろうなあと思っていた．思いつつ，hamasaki氏は授業のレポート兼お遊びでFOAFを使ったACSH（ACknowledgement Shake Hands：握手）システムなるものを実装していた．さて，いまやFOAFは成長を遂げ，過日のTBLの講演ではセマンティックWebのアクティビティの中でも特にFOAFに注目しているとまで言わしめたらしい．関連アプリケーションも続々と登場している．が，根本的によくわからないのは，FOAFの何が人々を引きつけているのかということだ．

FOAFはただのデータフォーマットだ．書けるのは自己紹介みたいなことと，「私は誰それを知っている」ということだけ．いまさら自己を晒してそんなに楽しいか？というのは彼の国でのWeblog革命（荒く言えば，ネット上にプライベートな情報が存在していなかったのが存在するようになった，読んでみるとおもしろかった，革命！）と同じ話であろう．しかしまあFOAFは文法的に難解で，あまり手書きしたい類のものではない．そのために簡易生成ツールがあるわけだが，それらにはFOAFがただの自己紹介ファイルで終わらない唯一最大の理由である「私は誰それを知っている」情報を記述するための支援が含まれていない．そんな片手落ちの状況でFOAFが流行している（らしい），それが全く理解できない．

もちろんその片手落ち状況が改善されればFOAFは流行るに違いない，とまでは思わないが，当座の問題を解消すべく提案されたのがACSH，のちのFOAF TrackBackである．使い方は本当は自分で書くべきなのだけれどもあまりに的確にまとまっている こちら を参照してください（おのひろきさんすみません）．ACSHという名前をやめたのには理由があって，語呂とコンセプトは大変いいのだけれども，FOAFでさえ何それ？という人がいる時に「FOAFのACSH」といっても誰にもわからないので，辛うじて概念が類似しているであろうTrackBackという言葉を導入した．ただし本家TrackBackは自動逆リンクシステムだがFOAF TrackBackは半自動（やや手動，ユーザの許可がないとリンクを張り返さない）である．人の場合は一方が友達だと思っていても他方はそう思っていない可能性があるので，というのは意地の悪い見方だがその方がリアルだろう．FOAF TrackBackを利用するにはRDFのファイルだけでは足りず，どうしてもCGIが必要になってしまうのが問題といえば問題．しかもいまはRNAにビルトインされている（戦略的に）．今後はこの仕組みを規格化していろいろなツールから呼べるようにしたいとは思っている．

最初にも書いたけれど，RNA/FOAFにそれなりの反応があった（いいか悪いかは別として）ということは，この手の仕組みがこれまでに存在しなかったことを意味するのかなあ．FOAF世界を知り尽くしているわけではないので断言はできないけど．それはともかくFOAF TrackBackの普及を手伝っていただける方を募集中です．実装面でもマーケティング面でも．サービス（ホスティング）化とか．．．実はsemblog.orgでは，こういった活動をするための拠点として"foaf.jp"なるドメインを取得していたりします．前回のCommunity Webの話を含めて，FOAFをセマンティックWebのキラープラットフォームにすべく立ち回るのが2004年のミッションになるかなあと．
